Most of us have hundreds and maybe even thousands of friends on social media. I have a friend that a few years ago that had exactly 666 friends on Facebook. When she hit that number she quickly sent out a post and said, "Quick! I need one more friend. I just hit 666 friends!" We all laughed and someone had another friend quickly send her another friend request. WHEW! Most of us know that we don't have hundreds or even thousands of friends. Honestly I don't have more than a small circle of close friends that do life with me. These friends know what's going on in my life ....good and bad. They encourage me, laugh with me, cry with me and I pray that I always do the same for them. Today I fear more and more the meaning of friend is getting lost somewhere in cyber space with the term friends being thrown around so freely on social media.
There is an old hymn that I love called "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" written by Joseph Scriven. Jesus is the best example of a friend and so much more. HE forgives, listens, encourages, carries or walks with us through trials, knows everything about us and yet still loves us...flaws and all. Do you know HIM or do you just know of HIM? Is Jesus your friend or is HE just an acquaintance of yours?
Once in a writing class a teacher asked, "What is the difference between an acquaintance and a friend?" There were a flurry of definitions floated around and discussed but the teacher finally interjected that most of us don't know the difference. I took that class over 30 years ago and I believe her statement is still true. Many of us just don't know the difference.
Maya Angelou once said in an interview that "There's a marked difference between acquaintances and friends. Most people really don't become friends. They become deep and serious acquaintances. But in a friendship you get to know the spirit of another person; and your values coincide. Friends may disagree, but not about serious matters. A friend will stand for you when you are no longer able. A woman can say to herself, “If I die, I know that my friend, my sister friend will be here to hold up the banner.” Now that’s very profound."
